WE meet every first Tuesday in the month at the Memorial Hall, Castle Street, Warkworth. 7.30 pm. A WARM WELCOME awaits you at any of our meetings, where you will find a wide variety of interests and skills on offer. Over forty members enjoy good speakers, demonstrations and outings, always with a friendly touch. Yes, we sing Jerusalem, and many of us make jam – but the WI is so much more than that: we have an Indoor Bowls Group, a Crafts Group, a Reading Group and a Campaigns Group which looks at national issues of concern to the WI. Shortly we hope to set up an Environmental Group with a village project in mind and we actively support local charities. WE AIM to provide a forum and meeting place for everyone, where friendship and laughter provide a backdrop for all the traditional WI affairs. Shepherds' Walks
At the April meeting our speaker was Jon Monks the founder of Shepherds' Walks. He gave a very interesting talk on his background which started as a sheep farmer with a love of walking, to writing a few walks, which became very popular, to taking over and building up Capricorn Mohair Socks. Shepherds' Walks organises walking events, training courses, guided walks Nordic walking and holidays in Northumberland and Sardinia. Because of the drastic change in the weather our meeting was attended by only twenty one members, but Jon braved the snowy hills of Rothbury to be with us and we were very glad we had braved the elements to listen to his story. I was interested in the Nordic walking having purchased sticks but never used them. I have now booked for the Nordic walk at Alnmouth later this month so will report back. It might be the start of a new hobby! June Carruthers |
Spirreli Ice Cream Parlour
Our monthly meeting was spent at Spirreli Ice Cream Parlour in Amble, where we were warmly welcomed by Nick and Katie Spurr. After a short W I Business Nick told us how the Ice Cream Parlour started when he converted the Shipyard Chandlery and he and Katie went to Italy to learn the art of making artisan ice cream.
Nick demonstrated how to make Strawberry Cheesecake and Salted Peanut ice creams. They use local milk and cream from Northumberland for the creaminess and flavour.
They also use local fruit when possible.
All members had a generous sample of their varied flavours, which were consumed with many oohs and aahs. We also sampled the two flavours which were made earlier in the evening. Forty-three members and two guests attended the meeting on a cold and very wet March evening, which proves the attraction of ice cream stays with you long after childhood.

The WI Christmas party went well with forty plus members turning up to enjoy a buffet supplied by Topsy Turvy.
Readings, poetry, songs and a Christmas quiz supplied by committee and members was amusing and entertaining.
