Plaster is one of those things, like the sound track on a film, that you don’t notice until it’s not right. Also like the sound on the movie, it takes a very skilled professional to get it right and make it look easy.

Local lad Matt Calder makes producing a silky smooth finish to your wall or ceiling look dead easy. It is for him – he’s been doing it every day for the last five years. He’s served his time as an apprentice, learned his trade, got his qualifications, and for the last year has been running his own business here in the district.

“Since I started advertising in The Cryer I’ve had a regular supply of work from Alnwick, Amble, Lesbury and Shilbottle. I’ve even picked up work in Felton and the magazine isn’t delivered there!”, says Matt. “I won’t say it’s all been plain sailing, setting up on my own, but I’m getting repeat work from satisified customers and quite a few have referred me to friends and neighbours”.

Unlike many construction tasks and skills, which DIY-ers can attempt quite successfully, plastering is a ‘knack’ skill. The knack is not an easy one to acquire and comes only after lots of patient training and practice. Also, unlike some of the other construction trades,
it can be surprisingly inexpensive compared to the major impact it has on a completed project. Matt offers to re-skim walls from as little as £70. Ceilings, depending on their size and current state, start from about £90.“The main cost is time”, says Matt, “Time spent
preparing the surface so that it is ready for plastering, time actually plastering and also waiting for the plaster to set sufficiently before you can smooth it to a superb finish. The setting time is the same whether you are plastering a whole wall or filling small cracks. It’s often no more expensive to get the whole wall re-skimmed rather than just patching up small areas.”

Matt is always happy to come and give a free quote with no obligation. He also has a number of satisfied local customers you can contact for a reference. So when you’re ready to get plastered, give him a ring and see just how smooth dealing with him can be!
