MARCH 2006 The Flower Club was a casualty of the recent wintry weather. The March meeting was cancelled as the demonstrator phoned to say that she felt her journey would be too hazardous. This meant a flurry of calls to members and regular visitors to tell them of the decision. We shall not be having our April meeting on the third Thursday. Instead, we are holding a coffee morning on Saturday, 22nd April in the United Reformed Church Hall from 10 a.m. to 11.30 a.m. There will be a stall, raffle and most important a silent auction. |

ON HER TRAVELS The title chosen by Pan Greenchild, the demonstrator, was Travels of a Flower Arranger. She began with a traditional style arrangement using white flowers and silver foliage.
In 2005 her travels took her on a memorable trip to the world show in Japan and for this Pam arranged her flowers against the background of a lovely parasol. The climax of the evening was a reminder of a holiday in Thailand when she cleverly used coconuts to create a boat. This held a mass of different flowers in clashing colours evocative of the exotic flowers and markets of the east. Pam was given a most appreciative vote of thanks by Pat Bagshaw. The members then served coffee and savouries. The chairman, Jan Archibald, outlined arrangements for the Flower Club's 40th anniversary evening in June. There will be a special demonstration by Kathleen Mailor, a buffet and celebratory cake with wine. Admission is by ticket only. These will cost £5 and are available from Jan Archibald, Margaret Burrell and Janet Jackson. The party will be held in the URC hall at 7.30 p.m. on Thursday June 15th 2006.

JUNE 15th 2006 We celebrated our 40th birthday with a most enjoyable evening and demonstration 'As Time Goes By' by Mrs Kathleen Marlor. The chairman, Jan Archibald, welcomed members and guests and then introduced Mrs Marlor who presented a special programme. She showed the variations and development of different styles of flower arranging over the years, from traditional through continental style to the most recent using metal containers, sisal and coloured oasis. Throughout, Kathleen used beautiful foliage and flowers in infinite variety and colour, lilies, gladioli, roses and gerbera. The final design, staged in an oval frame, was a 'Birthday Card' with an urn holding massed deep red carnations and roses. Whilst this was being assembled, The Founder Chairman of the club, Margaret Burrell recalled memorable occasions in the club activities. The demonstrator was given an appreciative vote of thanks by our vice chairman, Pat Bagshaw. Jan had made the birthday cake, which was decorated with the N.A.F.A.S. logo by Margaret Gibson. Jan proposed a toast to the club and then members and guests enjoyed a delicious buffet prepared by Pat Bagshaw and Janet Jackson, who had also created a striking ' Welcome' design, using deep cerise stocks and interesting foliage. |

JULY 20th 2006 At the July meeting we enjoyed a delightful evening with Mrs Irene Parker from Hexham, who chose as her theme "Summer Magic". Her programme included a wide variety of designs using lots of colour and many different flowers including beautiful roses, gerbera, lilies, lisianthus and orchids. Her foliage showed the large amount of excellent foliage she was able to gather from her garden. Irene had some fascinating containers collected on her flower arranging tours. She was warmly thanked by the programme secretary, Margaret Burrell. Our chairman, Jan Archibald, reminded members of the Floral Art classes at Warkworth Show. The next meeting is on Thursday 21st September in the Memorial Hall at 7.30 p.m. The demonstrator is Mrs Pam Alexander, whose title is "Something Different". This will be Pamela's first visit to Warkworth Flower Club so we look forward to seeing her work as one of the ladies who became an Area Demonstrator in 2005. Visitors are most welcome. The charge, which includes the demonstration and coffee and biscuits, is £3.50. |

The meeting of the Warkworth Flower Club proved to be a most entertaining occasion when members were joined by a number of friends of the Club to take part in a practical evening. Our instructors were Ann and Richard from the Flower Centre who helped us to create a Hallowe'en arrangement in a pumpkin. Very few flowers were required as we used berries and foliage from the garden and hedgerow. Some ladies completed their presentation by introducing sisal and spiders. During coffee time we were able to wander round and enjoy the arrangements. Ann and Richard were thanked by Janet Jackson. The chairman, Jan Archibald reminded members of the area AGM luncheon and demonstration at Gateshead in November. We were asked to support the Memorial Hall coffee morning on 18th November. The popular pre-Christmas open evening will be held on Thursday, 16th November at 7.30 p.m. in the Memorial Hall. Our demonstrator will be Phillida Irvine from Haydon Bridge whose theme is "Warm by the Fire". Phillida is a very imaginative lady who creates some original designs. There will also be a raffle, sales table and mince pies and shortbread will be served. Tickets (inclusive) are £5.

16th FEBRUARY 2006 Marion Hinchley of Ellington "Anything Goes With Style" The Chairman Jan Archibald welcomed members and a number of visitors to the February meeting of Warkworth Flower Club. The demonstrator, Mrs M. Hinchley, presented an enjoyable programme entitled "Anything Goes with Style" The period she chose was Art Nouveau and used interesting containers and a variety of flowers and foliage. White lilies in a metal and glass container recalled the wedding flowers of the period. Yellow roses and rolled bergenia leaves were arranged in a block design in a basket. Swathes of fabric were interwoven through a metal container, which held pink carnations and orchids. A sweeping design of white liasianthus and lilies complemented a graceful Art Nouveau figurine. Marion concluded her programme with three placements of carnations and roses in black wrought iron stands placed vertically and horizontally. Programme secretary Margaret Burrell thanked Marion for presenting such a delightful programme. The next meeting is on Thursday, 16th March at 7.30 p.m. when the demonstrator will be Kathleen Mailer with Enchanted by the Changing Scene. Visitors are welcome, the charge is £3.50 which includes coffee and biscuits. |

We held a successful fund-raising Coffee Morning in March. The next meeting will be held on Thursday 19th April at 7.30 p.m. in the Memorial Hall. Our demonstrator will be Mrs Mildred Stafford, Ferryhill, Co. Durham. Mildred is an Area Demonstrator who is most imaginative and has chosen as her title "Night and Day". Visitors are always welcome at our meetings - £3.50 for non-members inclusive of coffee and biscuits. |
|
APRIL 2007 Our chairman Jan Archibald introduced the demonstrator Mildred Stafford at the April meeting. She chose as her title Night and Day. Mildred used a variety of metal stands to display a wonderful selection of flowers including anthurinums, roses and lilies, all of the best quality. One memorable design was a vertical arrangement of roses in subtle shades of cerise placed in a wigwam of bamboo canes. The final design was most effective, built around a striking pedestal which Mildred, in true Blue Peter fashion, had prepared earlier. Throughout the evening her commentary was full of interest, introducing many valuable teaching points. Our vice chairman Pat Bagshaw expressed our appreciation for a most delightful demonstration. The demonstrator will be Anne Codd whose title is New Beginnings. Anne is an area demonstrator who has also been tutor on W.I. flower arrangement courses. Visitors are always welcome at our meetings and the charge, which includes the demonstration, coffee and biscuits is £3.50. |

17th MAY 2007 "New Beginnings" was the title chosen by the demonstrator, Mrs Anne Codd. Anne's first arrangement was a modern design of calla lillies, gerbera and bullrushes, followed by a striking piece of driftwood complemented by foliage, alstromoeria and peonies. A white watering can was used to display a magnificent orchid with toning carnations and white roses. Anne concluded with a pedestal design using a delightful mixture of garden flowers and foliage with roses from the florist. In her commentary we were given many valuable teaching points showing the effect of foliage in various shapes and textures to enhance the flowers. Anne was thanked by the programme secretary, Margaret Burrell. The chairman reminded members that the next meeting will be an Open Evening when we shall serve savouries. That meeting is on Thursday 21st June at 7.30 p.m. in the Memorial Hall. Area Demonstrator Mrs Karl Brunton will present "Theatre in Flowers". Entrance cost £5.00. |
|
|---|
THURSDAY 21st JUNE 2007 The June meeting was most enjoyable with the demonstrator Karl Brunner sharing with us her love of the theatre. Using the title Theatre in Flowers, she showed us arrangements in a variety of styles as she interpreted The Lion King, West Side Story, A Midsummer Night's Dream and My Fair Lady. Such a wide choice of titles meant that we were treated to proteas, gerbera, sunflowers, orchids and heliconeum alongside beautiful roses and carnations and wonderful foliage. Karl's skills as a teacher meant that throughout the evening we were given lots of helpful comments and hints on arranging. Pat Bagshaw gave a most appreciative vote of thanks. Chairman, Jan Archibald, reminded us that, although we have no meeting in August, some ladies are taking part in festivals at Warkworth parish church and with the area at Stannington church. Schedules for Warkworth Show on August 18th are available. There the floral art classes provide great interest to the visitors and cause much discussion. A group of ladies are joining Ellington Flower Club to visit the garden of area demonstrator Lynda Fraser at Brampton. The next meeting is on Thursday, July 19th at 7.30 p.m. in the Memorial Hall. The demonstrator is Christine Ogle from Morpeth who has chosen as her title A Stormy Night at Sea. Visitors are always most welcome. |

THURSDAY 19TH JULY
At the July meeting our chairman, Jan Archibald, welcomed Mrs Christine Ogle from Morpeth who was visiting the club for the first time. She created a variety of designs using different styles to illustrate her theme, 'A Stormy Night at Sea.' Christine used interesting containers and her flowers were of excellent quality including orchids, roses, antirrhinums, delphiniums and gladioli. Her final design was especially striking and arranged in a large boat-shaped container constructed from palm spathes. Throughout the evening she gave an enjoyable commentary which included lots of helpful teaching points. One member of the audience remarked, 'She was like a breath of fresh air'. Our vice chairman, Pat Bagshaw, thanked Christine for giving us such a delightful evening. There is no club meeting in August but it will be a busy month as we are taking part in the Flower Festival at St. Lawrence's Church and at the area festival at Stannington. Pat Bagshaw and Janet Jackson will represent Warkworth. Members are also taking part in Warkworth Show on Saturday 18th August. The next meeting is on Thursday 20th September at 7.30 p.m. when we are looking forward to the visit of the Misses Mary and Elizabeth Davidson from Alnwick who will present, 'Flowers and Quilting'. Visitors are always welcome. |

DELIGHTFUL DISPLAY
The Chairman, Jan Archibald, welcomed members and guests to our September meeting. She thanked those ladies who had taken part in the Parish Church Flower Festival and Warkworth Show in August. She also said how much the memorial window arrangement created by Pat Bagshaw and Janet Jackson at the area festival at Stannington had been admired. |
We enjoyed a most delightful evening as Mary and Elizabeth Davidson showed their skills in quilting and flower design. Both had given much time in preparing their exhibits. Mary's quilts and smaller pieces were beautifully done. She donated several items for the raffle which were greatly appreciated. Elizabeth's use of several original hand-made wrought-iron stands enabled us to enjoy a number of striking modern designs. She used some beautiful foliage from her own garden to enhance the roses, gerbera, orchids and anthuriums which were included in her designs. The commentary was most enjoyable and very helpful. Our vice-chairman Pat Bagshaw thanked the demonstrators and the applause showed how much we had all enjoyed the evening. The next meeting is on Thursday, October 17th at 7.30 p.m. and will be held in the United Reformed Church hall on The Butts. This will be a practical evening with Mrs M. Hinchley, Area Demonstrator, as our tutor. Visitors are always welcome - the charge is £3.50 which includes coffee and biscuits. |
