Letter from the Curate

Triptych of Stained Glass Windows in the Church of St Lawrence

Warkworth,

Morpeth,

Northumberland,

ENGLAND.

May 2008

Dear Friends,

World Environment Day is on June 5th 2008. The slogan for this year is KICK THE HABIT TOWARDS A LOW CARBON ECONOMY.

Come and visit the exhibition in The Church of St Lawrence; join in the family activities at the village school on Saturday afternoon 7th June 2008.

If the Earth
were only a few feet in
diameter, floating a few feet above
a field somewhere, people would come
from everywhere to marvel at it. People would
walk around it, marvelling  at its  big pools of water,
its little pools and the water flowing between the pools.
People would marvel at the  bumps on it and the holes in it
and they would marvel at the very thin layer of gas surrounding
it and the water suspended in the gas.  The people would marvel
at all the creatures  walking around the  surface  of the ball and  at
the  creatures in the water. The people would declare it as sacred
because  it  was the  only one and they  would protect it so that
it would not be hurt. The ball would be the greatest wonder
known and people would come to pray to it to be healed,
to gain knowledge, to know beauty and to wonder how
it could be. People would love it and defend it with
their lives because they would somehow know
that  their  lives,  their  own  roundness,
could  be  nothing  without  it. If the
Earth  were  only  a  few
feet in diameter.

We have in Warkworth a community environmental group called 'Act Now' formed by members of the Church of St Lawrence and people from Warkworth and the surrounding area, who take seriously the dire warnings world famous scientists presented to the Kyoto Conference as well as the deep concerns of so many local and national environmental organizations. Nationally and internationally we are gradually but oh so slowly realizing that we cannot go on as we are and that within a matter of a few generations the survival of people, habitat and even the earth itself will be at grave risk if current abuses of the environment are not addressed. Here, in our area 'Act Now' seeks to help us all to make some adjustments to the way we live so that we can make a difference locally.

Now like many of you, there is a new grandchild in our family, there are many lovely babies and toddlers in our area, our local schools are full of children with hopes and expectations of the part they want to play in the world. They are entitled to have a future with opportunities for growth and fulfilment. They are entitled to believe that the world we inhabit can be passed on to them in better condition than it now is. Our stewardship, Christians would say our God-given stewardship, of the world brings with it significant responsibilities. 'Act Now' believes that in our local area we can make a difference if we have the will to do so.

OUR HERITAGE

The village of Warkworth is defined by two medieval buildings, the Castle and the Church of St. Lawrence , both of which are visited by thousands of people every year.

The Church is still performing exactly the function for which it was built and is a major tourist attraction. Indeed apart from regular worship, baptisms, confirmations, marriages and funerals it is also used for the summer fair, concerts and other charity events which are open to everyone. Above all though, the Church building provides an oasis of calm for prayer, reflection and enjoyment for local residents and visitors alike.

Church Mouse
The Church Mouse reports.

Throughout Lent in St Lawrence's Church yours truly kept watch, from the window sill, over the bag of coins hung on the Lent Cross. You will recall that Grandma Mouse had upset the Vicar by eating the chocolate money stored away from last year. Well, after Easter we thought to give Grandma another treat. The poor old mouse broke her last remaining tooth on the money which turned out to be real coins – what sweet revenge!

There was lots of fun with the children’s Easter Egg Hunt in and around the church. Luckily they lost count and somehow didn’t find every one that had been hidden. A certain elderly mouse has a big, though toothless, grin on her face. How so, I hear you cry. I couldn’t possibly comment - my lips are sealed.

There has been a site meeting between all the experts who are going to work on Stage 1 of the North Wall Project. The Architect, Structural Engineer, Quantity Surveyor, Archaeologist and Rectified Photographer met with members of the Restoration Appeal Committee. They are organising the work to be done this summer, how to get equipment on the site and where to store it. Most importantly the Archaeologist is going to make some preliminary investigations to try to assess whether the main piling and trenches to accommodate the underground beams will disturb any hitherto undisturbed graves.

The rectified photography will record every single stone in the wall which has to be removed. When the stones have been replaced in exactly the same position, the beams will be hidden in between the two skins and the wall will look exactly as it has for over 800 years.

Everyone will get the chance to adopt their own numbered stone and watch it being returned to its original position at the end of the Stage 2 Construction next year. Folk can also adopt a mouse if they wish since we will have to look sharp when the builders start disturbing our runs.

There are lots of great ideas to involve everyone in our fundraising and have a bit of fun at the same time.

Remember to watch this space for news from your old friend The Church Mouse who is always on the case.
